Tom Nitsch Notes on Yachts Time and Culture "Being on a yacht under sail there has been many times the spirit of the beautiful music pieces around me - some that would match that mood on another level, another dimension. Maybe even enhance it or write it deeper into the own soul, if really played that moment. Different films of mine were greatly supported by music or maybe even got their flavour by it. Seven movements is a further step in direction to create a "sort of concert" on a "virtual stage" telling the story of yachting movements and aspects. So each "movement" has it's subject while the "virtual stage" is "assembled by other films I made besides yachting ones from "Carmen open air" to "Budistic monks" rituals: PRELUDE - LIKE PHOENIX OUT OF THE ASHES - THE AFFAIR - THE SPIRIT - THE RELATIVITY OF TIME - THE CIRCLE OF PLAYERS - THE SECRET DESTINATION - THE SCULTURED CHANT" DVD: 35 minutes € 39.--

Tom Nitsch The creation of the 295' threemasted schooner "Athena" at Royal Huisman Shipyard is a project, that seem to point into opposite directions: Yachting history´s hay days of the so called Golden Age around the turn of last century presenting enormous yachts under sail and power to the world and on the other hand very much future oriented introducing the latest of technical developments and comfort to life-style on the Seven Seas. So with "Athena" the rebirth of grandeur of those days shows a very vivid spirit of moving on to new developments for increasing perfection concerning yachtings old questions: speed, seaworthyness, style and quality. The film tries to locate Athena, tries to draw a map of the project in an entertaining way and points out that her designers and builder have brought the admired Golden Age standards even further up. x Minuten DVD, Text englisch € 39.--

Tom Nitsch Tom: "Coming from the Baltic where the classic yacht scene in the early 80´s was still unnoticed, the Mediterranean scene was a shock. Actually a positive one! The old yachting style with enormous yachts, marvellous craftmanship and large crews was back. A world that even experts had said to be dead forever. LA Nioulargue was already the annual absolute highlight of this renaissance, featuring spectacular yachts from the drawing boards of Fife, Nicholson, Alden, Stephens, Herreshoff and many others. It felt as if the excitement of all involved as well as of spectators was filling every fibre. A sort of electricity filled the air. I guess many felt this was absolutely unique and precious: it was the celebration of cultural values, demonstrating the positive forces of humans, the skills of designers, craftsmen as well as sailors. It was magic! The film tries to capture this introducing the viewer to the yachts, to their aesthetics, to the competition, and to the apres-sail activities of St. Tropez: You are there, sitting in a waterfront cafe-chair, watching scenes from another era ...." 45 Minuten DVD, Text englisch € 39.--

Tom Nitsch Tom: "From ´92 through ´95 filmmaterial was collected during all Nioulargues as well as a little at Regatte Royal / Cannes. Finally I decided to come up with an unconventional film: No narration but instead a dialogue of sailors, skippers and owners created by the statements collected. Also music should play a strong part. The result was something not seen before in this genre - too close to avantgarde for TV - but besides the countless days and efforts of shooting, there is also a tremendous work of editing behind it. At the world´s largest independent filmfestival in Houston it was honored with Gold and also became Video of the Year by the Kreuzerabteilung of DSV. So even more than La Nioulargue this homage catches the spirit of the St.Tropez event, the ambiente, the philosophies, from what it takes to handle these vessels to the visual joy and beauty of the spectacle. A counterpoint to the classics is presented with push button sailing aboard the ultra modern cruiser/racer Wallygator." 52 Minuten DVD, Text englisch € 39.--

Tom Nitsch Tom: "In 1997 the rerun of the first official Transatlantic Race of 1905 left no doubt, that the Golden Age of yachting had returned. This was the best opportunity possible to establish the basic concept of this film series in combining current events with the history of yachting. Most interesting was the participation of ADIX , a yacht which is very close to size and rig to the three masted schooner ATLANTIC, which won the1905 race in a until then still unbeaten record of 12 days - 4 hours from New York to Lizard Point in England. This was the great challenge for a fleet of the worlds finest yachts to beat. The main camera was on board the Max Oertz schooner AELLO who´s skipper addressed his crew: It will not be a boje-race .... He should be right: Aello lost it´s topmast and encountered more problems later on." 52 Minuten DVD, Text englisch € 39.--

Tom Nitsch Tom: "The renaissance of the Classics also brought these yachts back to the Clyde near Glasgow, where fantastic ones had been designed and built by the Scottish Fife-dynasty during the Golden Age of yachting nearly 100 years ago. They are still considered to be the most beautiful yachts ever produced: Some of these yachts are simply pure and perfect (Phillipe Lechevallier, Skipper of Moonbeam). They represented functional art as American Lance Lee states: art, not only to be enjoyed by the eye .... The first meeting of the Fife-yachts in 1998 at the place where they have been built was a very good opportunity to record and recall the story of these sailing masterpieces, as well as the rebirth through the painstaking restoration of these elegant vessels by people committed to holding on to those values of the Golden Age : Immaculate, beautiful, powerful, fast, seaworthy and strong." 45 Minuten DVD, Text englisch € 39.--

Tom Nitsch Tom: "In the early nineteen hundreds, the racing of craft built to the new 15 metre rule was a high-light of that Golden Age of Yachting. Nineteen had originally hit the startline, but only very few survived. Beeing around at the yard Fairlie Restorations during the making of Enchanted By The Dragon I was whitnes of the final touches to the new keel for The Lady Anne, It was made possible by the owner, as well as Skipper Paul Goss and the yard crew to document the process of her return to original, which gives an idea of building in the old days. In 1999 the process cumilated with her launching. Just a little later the skills of her crew racing her against another 15mR in Mediterranean show off the excellence of William Fife´s creation to the full. The sleeping beauty had been kissed awake ..... by more than one prince ....." 52 Minuten DVD, Text englisch € 39.--

Tom Nitsch Tom: "Being involved with my cameras in many yachting events as well as building projects in 2000 and 2001 the pictures presented to me have by far exceeded any concept I had when I started documenting the renaissance of the classic yachts more than a decade ago. The Golden Age was history - lost and unbelievable, nearly a myth. Suddenly, it has almost come back - we witness it in all it´s many aspects - we are even beyond the Golden Age in scale! The film shows ranges from spectacular events like the America´s Cup Jubilee at Cowes in 2001 to quieter reflective images captured whilst moored to Swedish rocks. All edited to music in different sequences. It includes the launching of the breath-taking replica of the famous 140´ schooner WESTWARD and the turning of the underwater section of the newbuilt 1000 tonne new build schooner ATHENA at Royal Huisman Shipyard. Besides all this spectacular there is also room for a twinkle in the camera eye." 35 Minuten DVD, Text englisch € 39.--

Tom Nitsch Tom: "The worldwide fame of the Abeking & Rasmussen yard stems from the tradition of design and construction quality established by its founder, Henry Rasmussen. When a family decided to embark on a circumnavigation aboard a new high performance cruiser it provided a wonderful opportunity to study modern developments in yacht building in a unique historical setting. This superyacht-project also brought the camera to places around the world to meet the team formed by yacht-consultant Jens Cornelsen: the naval architect Bill Tripp in Connecticut, the interior designer Andrew Winch in London, sailmaking of North in the US and Denmark, as well as carbon-mastbuilding by Marten Spars in New Zealand. This is also the place where we see ALITHIA finally racing during the MIllennium Cup." 58 Minuten DVD, Text englisch € 39.--

Tom Nitsch Tom: "No one who witnessed the night-time progress of the barge carrying the new 165´ BORKUMRIFF IV through the first narrow lifting bridge of Holland´s canals can have failed to draw a breath at this latest marvel from the Royal Huisman Shipyard. The educated eye could have immediately discerned the historical background of this schooner; for others it was maybe simply a spectacular moment, whilst for some it had the surreal qualities of a Fellini movie. But for all, there might have been a mystical touch about it, not only reflecting the skills and capabilities of the whole team behind this creation, but also what science describes as the phenomenon of resonance: An unusually knowledgeable owner chooses a legendary yard to build his vision to the specifications defined by an outstanding team of naval architects and interior designer, who speak of their working together as if it were a family-business. Finally, when sailing into the bay of Gloucester as the yacht follows the tracks of schooner history up the East Coast of the U.S.A., it is as if a magical circle has been completed : A spirit has been discovered to be alive, which seems to linger on from the schooner heydays, reflecting the enthusiasm behind BORKUMRIFF IV." 58 Minuten DVD, Text englisch € 39.--
